I’m excited to introduce a new quilt pattern that’s been in the works for awhile! Hockey has been one of the most requested sports the past year or two and I’m so glad to finally button this pattern up and get it into your hands.

This versatile design, Faceoff, offers two color layout options: a sleek two-color version, perfect for utilizing your team colors, or a four-color version to really let your creativity shine.
Whether you're celebrating a growing hockey family, needing a cozy throw for watching your favorite team on the ice or have been searching for the perfect pattern for your favorite hockey player’s bed, this pattern has you covered.
Keep reading for all the deets and important things to know about this pattern.
About the Design
There have been many iterations of this design but the focus of the pattern has always been on the crossed hockey sticks representing a “Faceoff” in hockey.

A Faceoff is a method of beginning play in hockey in which two opponents face each other and attempt to gain control of the puck dropped between them. While in reality there is only one hockey puck in play, the design felt more balanced having two pucks - one on each side.

In addition to the hockey sticks and pucks, the design is representative of the many stripes seen in hockey jerseys and socks. The stripes flank the sticks and form in four “v” shapes to accentuate the hockey sticks as the focal point of the design.

Techniques
Faceoff is an intermediate level block-based pattern that utilizes mostly half square triangles and snowball corners (aka stitch-n-flip).

There are quite a few snowball corners so if you want to make the most of your fabric, you can utilize this bonus HST method to save your corners as half square triangles to use in another project - or make a bonus pillow to go with your quilt!
I'm going to say the dreaded "C" word here but hang in there with me! There are a few curves – only four total for the hockey puck blocks. Templates are included for each size and if you’ve never used templates before, you can check out my blog posts on how to make your templates and use them to cut your fabric. I also have a blog post with my best tips for sewing curves here.
The templates were made to include room for trimming and squaring up each half circle subunit (because is anyone really perfect at sewing curves?) so I've also included video instructions in the pattern to guide you through trimming these subunits.
Color Options
This pattern is essentially two patterns in one – there is the option to use just two colors (perfect if you want to use your two team colors or for a more subtle focus on the hockey design) or you can choose the four color option if you have more colors you want to work with.
If you like to print your PDF patterns, I suggest printing only the assembly instructions and labels for the version you plan to make so be sure to look through the entire pattern before printing.
Not sure which one is for you? This pattern is available to make your own mockups on QuiltInk. QuiltInk is an online coloring tool used to make your fabric choices come to life quickly and easily. Compare different fabric options and gather inspiration from other users’ mockups too!

Finished Sizes
Whether you have a new baby on the way who will eventually take up the sport, you want a cozy throw for the sofa or your favorite hockey player needs this quilt for their bed, this pattern has you covered!

The three finished sizes include -
Baby (40 inches x 50 inches)
Throw (56 inches x 70 inches)
Twin (72 inches x 90 inches)
The pattern is the same for all sizes but is scaled up in block size for each subsequent finished size.
There are a few instances in the pattern where differences in measurements are denoted in parentheses (baby, throw, twin) so be sure to pay attention to which measurement coincides with the size you are making.
Stay organized

This quilt pattern not only has labels provided for each cut in the cutting chart but there are also labels for all subunits and blocks to keep you organized throughout the pattern.
I highly recommend printing out the labels before you begin and having them cut out an available at each step of the quilt pattern.
There are labels included for both the four color and two color versions (which vary slightly) so be sure you are printing out the correct labels.
